From the legendary Coal River Valley vineyard established in 1988, Tolpuddle has become a benchmark for Tasmanian Pinot Noir under the stewardship of Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW of Shaw + Smith since 2011. Named after the Tolpuddle Martyrs, English convicts transported to Tasmania for forming an agricultural union, this single vineyard consistently produces wines of extraordinary precision and finesse from 35-year-old vines. The 2022 vintage was the coldest in over a decade, resulting in concentrated flavors and exceptional natural acidity.
Tasting Notes
Deeply perfumed with aromas of dark cherry, wild strawberry, violets, rose petals, and forest floor, interwoven with exotic spice, charcuterie, and roasting game notes. The palate displays remarkable elegance with fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity, offering flavors of dark cherry, panforte, hazelnut, twiggy herbs, graphite, and earthy truffle. Complex whole-bunch influences contribute to its architectural structure, while subtle oak provides cedary, mahogany seasoning. The finish is long and persistent with exceptional balance and aging potential through the 2030s.
Food Pairings
Duck confit, wild mushroom risotto, roasted game birds, aged cheeses
