Schloss Gobelsburg, Riesling "Heiligenstein 1er" 2022 Kamptal, Austria

Schloss Gobelsburg is the oldest wine estate in the Danube appellation of Kamptal, with a documented history of viticulture that began in the 12th century, and in 2021, the distinguished estate commemorated its 850th year of winemaking tradition. Ried Heiligenstein topping the namesake mountain is interspersed with Riesling terraces and is a landmark of Langenlois and one of the oldest and highest regarded vineyards of the Danube wine area. Under the guidance of winemaker Michael Moosbrugger, this estate has become renowned for producing some of Austria's most distinguished Rieslings from this legendary single vineyard site.

Tasting Notes

A very classic, mature, high-end Austrian riesling with ravishing ripe-apricot and candied-orange character, plus hints of toasted nuts and bitter chocolate. Now fully mature with impressive concentration and ripeness, the structure showing ever stronger the further it flows over the palate. Long, rich finish that pulls you back for more. From a site that is usually all about sleek elegance, this is remarkably substantial and richly textural on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Wonderful fine tannins, candied citrus fruit and complex dried flower character. Lovely fresh acidity for the hot and dry vintage at the long, delicately spicy finish.
