The fifth generation of his family to make wine in the Douro, Mateus is grandson of Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, founder of Portugal's legendary Casa Ferreirinha Barca Velha. Together with his wife Teresa Ameztoy, they craft their wines underground in a schist cave at their Adega do Sável (Alosa alosa), bringing together their scientific backgrounds with an artisanal approach. Their stated objective is "to be transparent, and to transmit the elementary concepts of Douro, even if you are drinking them on Venice Beach!"
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a ruby color of medium intensity. The nose is expressive and tasty, with slightly meaty notes and hints of maceration. Aromas include candied red cherry, crushed strawberry, red plum, with a fresh and tangy touch. The bouquet reveals ripe red fruits with hints of damp earth, while the palate shows complexity with unveiling layers of flavors.
