Ferdinando Principiano is one of the new crop of exciting young winegrowers to farm Piedmont's Langhe hills. He graduated from Alba's Scuola Viticole Umberto I in 1993, joining his father Americo at the Monforte D'Alba domaine following apprenticeships with legendary producers Giacomo Conterno and Roberto Voerzio. Since the mid 2000's he completely changed his style by giving priority to the care of the vineyards without using herbicides, with barriques replaced by big oak barrels, pressing done with feet and only indigenous yeasts used. His philosophy is not to stress the plant but to accompany and take care of it without being too much interventionist.
Tasting Notes
Withered rose and violet then berries such as cherry, currant and blackberry, mineral and with vegetal and hazelnut notes, truffle hints and light ethereal notes. On the nose, this Barolo Ravera is a riot of heady aromas, with surprising flavors of truffle and hazelnut, while on the palate it is noble and graceful, long and powerful. In the mouth this red wine is powerful with a nice balance between acidity and tannins. Extraordinary characteristics of this celebrated vineyard, capable of combining the longevity and solidity typical of Monforte with floral flutters and finesse.
